Abstract

The Senator Avel L. Gordly Papers document Gordly's political career in the Oregon legislature and her ongoing activism and advocacy on issues impacting the African American community, both in Portland and beyond.  She was the first African American woman elected to the Oregon Senate in the history of the state. This collection  includes documents, publications, and  photographs reflecting Gordly's public and political life, including her education, her ongoing community activism and advocacy and her periods in elected office. It also includes digital audio recordings and transcripts of interviews completed by Patricia A. Schechter, associate professor of history at Portland State, in 2009.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Gordly collection includes documents, publications, and  photographs reflecting Gordly's public and political life, including her education, her ongoing community activism and advocacy and her periods in elected office.  It also includes digital audio recordings and transcripts of interviews completed by Patricia A. Schechter, associate professor of history at Portland State, in 2009.

Collection Historical Note

The Avel L. Gordly Papers documents Gordly's political career in the Oregon legislature. She was the first African-American woman elected to the Oregon Senate in the history of the state.
