Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection is housed at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, please visit OJMCHE for to access this collection, reading room information, or to make  a research appointment.

The collection contains materials from Jewish businesses in Portland, Asotria, Baker City, Eugene, and, Salem. This collection includes photographs, advertisements, oral interviews, and, papers relating to Jewish businesses in Oregon. The business descriptions include the personal histories of founders, as well as name changes, the business’ relationship to its local community, and the current state of the business, if known.

Collection Historical Note

Business ownership is a decisive way that Jews have developed a presence in Oregon communities from the 19th century to today. Many Jewish business owners became active members in politics and the arts, becoming position-holders, and donors to local organizations. Additionally, businesses that catered to the cultural traditions of Jews were often the cornerstones of local Jewish communities, both employing Jewish workers and supplying the traditional items for cultural and religious expression. Many of the businesses were started by immigrants who moved to the Northwest for the Gold Rush or emigrated to America to avoid wartime politics or persecution.  Individual histories of businesses are provided at the series level.

Series 66: Heppner & Blackman,1800sAdd to your cart.

After peddling goods in California and Corvallis, the discovery of gold lured Henry Heppner to Oregon. He began by operating a mule pack train from The Dalles to Canyon City and the Idaho mines in 1861. The trail was difficult and the local Indians unfriendly. Several trains were ambushed until Henry found a safe route. After 13 years of following the miners and providing supplies, Henry and Colonel Jackson Morrow opened the first mercantile store in the Umatilla area. The store prospered as the town grew, but Henry moved on and left his share of the business to his nephew and brother-in-law.

According to reports, the meeting to name the new town Heppner had only one vote against it: Henry Heppner's.
